Amanda Randles creates virtual simulations that incorporate data from patients' wearable devices. To that end, Randles, a professor of biomedical sciences at Duke University's Pratt School of Engineering, spends her time building some of those virtual simulations. Tracking cancer cellsWhen cancer cells circulate through the bloodstream, they can sometimes acclimate in a different part of the body and form new tumors, which is known as metastasis. In her simulations, Randles changes different parameters, like how the size of the cell's nucleus affects its movement. Advertisement"What is it about the cancer cells that are making them more likely to go to the brain or to the breast," she said.

There are some companies all-in, as a brand, in fighting climate change , such as Patagonia. So-called green perks, also referred to as climate change benefits, could help to bridge that gap. A rising, though still marginal trend in the job market, employee enticement and compensation packages tied to climate change can help to make these abstractions clearer and more actionable in the workplace. "There's a nascent but growing interest in climate change benefits," Schneider said, pointing out that Google searches for commuter benefits, as an example, are trending up. Green perks are a benefits arena where the demand would seem to outstrip supply, and green commuter benefits may be the first indication of a wider adoption wave.

New app store AltStore could be coming to iPhones in the EU after to 2024 regional rule changes. The Apple App Store rival aims to give developers more control over app distribution and payment. AltStore offers a peek into how iPhone apps could change in the US if Apple loses a DOJ lawsuit. They'll also be able to use the same Patreon integration to distribute 'paid' apps, Testut told TechCrunch. "This lawsuit threatens who we are and the principles that set Apple products apart in fiercely competitive markets," Apple told BI in March.

Here are some of the ways the DOJ says Apple is a monopoly. AdvertisementHere are a few ways the DOJ argues that Apple maintains a tight hold over the iPhone ecosystem — and keeps competitors out. The suit argues that Apple sets conditions for the apps it allows on the App Store and imposes anti-competitive rules and regulations. The suit argues that Apple makes third-party messaging apps on the iPhone "worse" than Apple messages. More smartwatch optionsA Google Pixel Watch and the iPhone don't play as nicely together as an Apple Watch and the iPhone. GoogleIf the Apple Watch isn't your cup of tea, a court loss for the company could make using an alternative watch with the iPhone more seamless. Prosecutors said the Apple Watch depends too much on the iPhone while other smartwatches aren't nearly as compatible with the iOS system. iOS users might have been overcharged for music streaming subscriptions due to the fees placed on app developers by Apple, regulators said. Why do phones need apps? At this year's Mobile World Congress, the future of the smartphone and how we connect were firmly under the microscope. Deutsche Telekom and Brain.ai demoed one such instance at MWC: a smartphone with no apps. It's just an idea for now, but it's prompting an interesting question: Why assume the smartphone of the future has apps at all? But the smartphone industry is slumping, and there's a "need to invigorate the upgrade cycle," Milanesi told BI.

Having a higher VO2 max is good, but more important for health is how the number changes over time. There's a way to use VO2 max to improve heart health and fitness without getting too bogged down in the data. So you have a higher VO2 max, you have a better endurance capacity," Blander said. Men tend to have a slightly higher VO2 max, so an example for an active man could be around 42 mL/kg/min. "If you have higher VO2 max you have a much better chance based on our data analysis to live better, longer, which is amazing," Blander said.

The smart ring era is here. Honor, the mobile business spun out of Huawei, also announced this week that it's working on a smart ring. Avi Greengart, president and lead analyst at Techsponential, told Business Insider at MWC that Samsung's Galaxy Ring "validates the smart ring category." Rumors of an Apple smart ring have been simmering for over a decade — mostly due to a string of patents the company has filed for. There's another good reason tech companies are eyeing smart rings right now, according to IDC analyst Francisco Jeronimo: subscriptions.

Over the last two years, my 12-year-old son has become increasingly consumed with going to the woods near our home. But just like many other tweens, he's also asked, "Can you get me a cellphone?" We bought him a pocket knife. He mostly keeps the knife in his pocket when he heads outdoors, only bringing it out when a project calls for a sharp object. As for the pocket knife, when it's not in use or at the bottom of his camo pants pocket, it stays safely displayed in his bedroom, a token of independence and ingenuity.

Apple smartwatches ads are displayed as customers take a look at smartwatch accessories at the Apple store in New York, U.S., December 26, 2023. Apple will again be barred from selling watches with blood oxygen sensors beginning Thursday, a federal appeals court said Wednesday. The decision is a blow to Apple, which was previously forced to remove the latest Apple Watches from its U.S. stores for several days in December. Apple may be forced to remove a blood oxygen sensor feature on its latest devices in order to keep the smartwatches on the U.S. market. If Apple must continue to keep its latest smartwatches from U.S. stores, it could complicate repairs at Apple stores, which often swap broken devices with replacements.
Persons: Masimo Organizations: Apple, U.S, Appeals, Federal Circuit, International Trade Commission, Apple Watch Locations: New York, U.S
The document didn't disclose how Apple plans to remove the blood-oxygen sensor, although analysts have speculated the change could come through a software update. Masimo won a favorable ruling from the U.S. International Trade Commission in late October that prompted Apple to temporarily halt sales of the Apple Watch models with the blood-oxygen sensor just before Christmas. But Apple then filed an appeal of the ITC ruling that resulted in a order clearing the way for the two Apple Watch models to return to stores shortly after Christmas while the appeal is under review. If it does, the Series 9 and Ultra 2 can remain on sale with the blood-oxygen sensors intact. Apple declined to comment on the court filing disclosing its plans to remove the blood-oxygen sensor if the stay isn't extended.

New York CNN —Apple has received approval to change the way its smartwatches function so the company can overcome the Apple Watch ban imposed by a US court. Masimo’s attorney said that although the proceeding itself is confidential, he confirmed that the government had no objection to Apple importing the Apple Watch as long as it did not contain that pulse oximeter functionality. Apple had successfully sued to temporarily block a US International Trade Commission ruling that prevents Apple from importing the Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2, among other newer models, because they violate Masimo’s patents. Apple had said it “strongly disagrees” with the ban and pledged to “take all measures” to bring the Apple Watch back to US customers soon. Apple has routinely marketed its smartwatch as a life-saving device, which has helped launch the Apple Watch into the stratosphere, making it the most popular watch sold around the world.

Apple had said that a proposed redesign would allow it to circumvent findings that the watches infringe Masimo's blood-oxygen reading pulse oximetry patents. According to Masimo's filing on Monday with the Federal Circuit, Apple told the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency that its redesigned watches "definitively do not contain pulse oximetry functionality." Irvine, California-based Masimo has accused Apple of hiring away its employees and stealing its pulse oximetry technology to use in Apple Watches after discussing a potential collaboration. Apple has included a pulse oximeter feature in smartwatches since its Series 6 Apple Watch in 2020. Masimo asked the ITC in 2021 to bar Apple's imports and sales of Apple Watches that allegedly infringed its patents.
